Today was going to be a hugely productive day which turned out to be only a semi-productive day (inorite?). I originally had all of these plans to go take Gin to the vet to get her stitches taken out (spay and neuter your pets, folks), go renew the tags on my lisence plate, do the dishes, and maybe go up to animal control to get Gin's lisence.

Of course, the only thing I actually did today was to renew my tags ($76, thank god tomorrow is payday). I called this morning to see if I could get the dog into the vet today, since they never set me up with a follow-up appointment, and was told to wait another week. I told the guy she was bleeding last night (and all over our sheets, too--yuck) and according to that guy it's fairly normal and possibly she was in heat when we got her fixed and OMG DOGS HAVE PERIODS, blah blah blah. I was gettting uncomfortable quickly (though no fault of this dude's--he was completely professional but I have issues talking to people with penises sometimes especially when it's about people (or in this case, dogs) with no penises) and the entire time I was trying to keep from losing it and blurting out something inappropriate about dog vaginas, or ZOMG her tits are huge seriously they're so fucking big is that normal. (I wonder how many people will get here via googling 'dog vaginas'.)

So, this is Australia.

Actually, no, this is not Australia, but I am getting taken out to dinner tonight by some friends so there's a big HELL YES! for free food and friends.

Also, my computer has been sucking lately (as has my broadband card, which I suspect is actually the problem), so my internet access is shoddy at best and non-existant at worst. Which is kind of crappy because I was planning on attempting to switch my blog over to WordPress today, but it looks like that plan is blown (at least for now). Ultimately I believe I'm causing more damage to the card by attempting to get the thing to JUST FUCKING WORK, so I'm hoping that if I call a company who for legal reasons shall be known as Oh My God My Brain Is Going To Explode, I can possibly secure another broadband card for free. Maybe.

Oh. My baby kitten has adult teeth now. Sob.

Yesterday the missus and the bestie and I stopped by the local Humane Society to take a look (we do this fairly often) without any intention to adopt (we all live in apartments and have the max. allowed number of animals). We found a female terrier mix, Flora, who had been a stray. She was very scared and skittish, and apparently had nipped at a few people (there were two signs on her cage that warned of her biting).

We wanted to take her out and play with her, because she seemed really sweet, if a little frightened. The women at the desk actually advised us not to take her out to play with her ("she's not the best dog for that sort of thing" I believe were the exact words one of them used). Basically, they had given up on her. They did (reluctantly) let us take her out, and she warmed up very quickly, and stopped her shaking and started wagging her tail and giving us kisses (didn't try to bite us once). We decided that we wanted her.

Problem: I filled out an application (we had to, to play with her), on which I wrote that we have two cats (we do, and we're only paying rent for one of them--as far as the apartment complex is concerned, Gir does not exist). And according to the Humane Society's Big Book Of Stupid Rules, my apartment complex only allows one animal per apartment (that's wrong--it's actually two, at least it was when we moved in). The lady at the desk said that she would call the complex to check on the policy, and that we could place a hold on her until she got a yes or no.

The worst case scenario is that we won't get the dog and that we have to start paying for Gir. Which, after stressing about it all last night, I'm coming to terms with. But I still want the dog to go to a loving home, which I'm afraid won't happen if they keep scaring potential owners away with bite signs. When we were holding her, several people commented on how cute she was, and generally cooing over her, but at the end of our visit, she was back in her cage with giant orange signs warning people away.

This is Flora.

She is three years old and very sweet. She is good with dogs and cats, but gets nervous around small children. Her adoption fee is $125, which includes shots and spaying. She must be spayed before she's allowed to leave the Humane Society, and is available for adoption on July 28th (that's this coming Tuesday).

If you are not able to take on a dog at this point, please take the time to write the Genesee Humane Society to ask them to take the bite signs down and stop discouraging people from considering her for adoption. No animal should be given up on so easily.

Oh, damn, I almost forgot! I started my job today. Well, at this point yesterday. I think it went okay, but I severely underestimated how large the shirts were going to be and ordered a medium. It goes down to my knees and I need to order new, smaller shirts soon because it's a pain in the ass to tuck in to my pants. (I hate tucking shirts into pants. It just sends an "ew" down my spine.)

It will be nice to have another paycheck. We can definitely use the money, as there is now talk of visiting Laura's parents in New Hampshire (still not sure why NH, they're from Jersey) in August. Unfortunately, it's like a 15 hour drive as per the estimations I did in my head without any actual units of measurement to base it off of, and we definitely can't afford two round-trip plane tickets plus hotel accommodations for three nights. Shit, man.

The CDC reported last month (yeah, I know) that while teen sex rates have remained steady in recent years, use of contraception is down--and as such, teen pregnancy is up.

This is why abstinence-only sex education is complete and utter bullshit. Preaching at teenagers to deny a natural part of their human existence and then providing no safety net should they decide to do it anyway, because, you know, of the hormones, causes huge fucking problems. Like not teaching kids how to do it safely. Because if they have sex, they're whores and deserve whatever they get, right?

The fact is, 95% of Americans have sex before marriage, so is it really any wonder that when we push shit on teens like "abstinence until marriage" and "condoms cause cancer" and "the pill kills" we end up with higher pregnancy rates? Not to mention the Bush Administration's war on birth control, including raising costs of the pill and placing restrictions on who can obtain what kind of birth control where and when and 'damn it if you don't want to give it to them you don't have to-conscience clause' nonsense.

It's pretty damn nice to have at least a semi-progressive president in office.

What bothers me is that the author of this article is too busy demonizing single mothers for not spending enough time with their kids to make the point that single mothers HAVE to work, you know, for their kids. So they can eat and have clothes and a place to live--you know, frivolities like that.

And check out the construction of this sentence:
Single mothers spend less time with children, on average because as a group they are less educated than married mothers -- and more highly educated mothers spend more time with children, the researchers said.

That's kind of like saying people who eat ice cream are more likely to drown. (You know, that whole misrepresenting statistics thing you learned about in college? How the third factor is that it's summer, therefore more people eat ice cream and swim? Good.)
Can we admit that it might be possible that the age at which one has children can contribute to education experience, and that women who have their children younger might ostensibly be forced into the workforce at a younger age to care for said children?

Gir got some blue shit on the back of his neck as a result of tearing apart my empty Arby's bag yesterday, so today he gets a bath and the gods get a good chuckle out of the entire thing.

I bought some cherry cigarettes today and am not disappointed, but I'm still looking for the cappuccino flavored ones--why does no one carry them? Also I realized that I can't pronounce Djarum so I had to figure it out online when I got home (for the record, it's JA ROOM), and wondered how long I've been saying it incorrectly and sounding like an ass.

I brought Laura some Paliani's for lunch today but we both filled up on breadsticks and salad before we even got to the strombolis. (Stromboli? Spell check suggests trombonists instead, which to me do not sound as tasty, but then I've never tried to eat a trombonist so I couldn't say for sure.)

I start my new job at Subway on Sunday (woo, glamorous!)--I had a dream that I was working drive-thru but no one taught me how to do it so I utterly failed and was consequently fired. Our location does not have a drive-thru so I hope to avoid this.

I forgot batteries at the store again. Damn.

While I disagree wholeheartedly with your stance on gay marriage, I am impressed that you held your convictions and did not sway to public scrutiny because it was the 'politically correct' thing to do. Many people in your position would not have had the will to do so in such a spotlight, and I believe it takes great courage to stand up for what you believe in, regardless of whether your opinion is that of your audience.

I do hope, however, that in time you will change your mind on this issue, as many people's lives and liberties are at stake in the current upheaval over marriage rights for those within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. I also hope that you take the opportunity that Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, has offered and sit down with him and those he has invited to share with you. It would be great to see an open, honest dialogue between people with different beliefs.

Allen Andrade, the man that killed transgender teen Angie Zapata, was convicted today of first-degree murder and a hate crime. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. This is a huge breakthrough for transgender rights, as this is the first time that a state hate crime statute has been used to prosecute a transgender person's murder.

A spot of good news, today: less than 24 hours after the Afghan women's protest, President Karzai announced Afghanistan will repeal the law that legalized rape within marriage.
This came after a group of 300 to 500 women marched in the capital to protest the law yesterday, amidst a maelstrom of opposition from 600 to 700 men supporting the law.

This is a huge victory for women's rights in Afghanistan, especially after the initial blow the passage of the law caused in the first place. Hopefully, things will stay on this track.

New York governor David Paterson is pushing a bill through to legalize same-sex marriage within the state.
He: "I think it is--as some other states are showing--the only ethical way to treat the people who want to live together in peace under the civil law."

I'm doing quite well, thank you.

Currently, the missus is sick with a bug caught from the bestie (thanxalot), so while she sleeps it off I'm blogging.

I cut my hair, which I'm still getting used to--it's really short! I mean, REALLY short.

We went to visit my grandpa for Easter, as did my aunts and my uncle that I have not seen in years, which was delightfully awkward, but grandpa can cook a mean ham. Also we made a stop up to Lake Huron so Laura could see it. She was delighted to see water again, and we got ice cream with my dad later that day.

Also, I quit Little Caesars with a smile on my face and a song in my heart.
And I bought an upside-down catfish for Laura, which has done nothing but hide under the little plastic shack in the fish tank for the past week and conned me out of $7. I've only seen the damn thing twice since I put him in the tank (and one of those times was when I moved the shack--only to have him race underneath the little plastic treasure chest).

I suppose that's it for now.

Literally. CNN.com has, at the time of this post, four separate headlines on their main page that include the words "missing" or "disappeared" or some variation of one of the two.

What gives? People disappear all the time, but it seems to be almost trendy, now--everyone has to be missing. It's completely over reported, which I suppose can be considered a good thing, but come on. One of the headlines is about a missing dog.

What about real news? I don't see one thing on the main page about Vermont's ruling for same-sex marriages in the state. I had to do a search about it, and for god's sake, it happened TODAY, less than a week after Iowa courts UNANIMOUSLY overturned the ban against marriage equality in that state. Check it.

And then do a little dance for equal rights and people who are finally getting them.

I got suspended from one of my jobs due to lame bullshit so now I have more time to clean and get things done around the house. Order of business today goes as follows:

Dishes.
Maybe clean a little?
Sell back some movies to FYE (if I feel up to getting out of the house today).

My screen has a ton of fingerprints on it. I should clean that off.

Alright, so I know by now this is probably old news, but they're revamping Bonnie and Clyde (1967) with the role of Bonnie being played by... wait for it... Hilary Duff. That's right!

Aren't you excited? Literally squealing for joy?

No offense to Hilary, but I can think of about a million people who would be better suited to play Bonnie. Apparently, so can Faye Dunaway, who played her in the original film. "Couldn't they at least cast a real actress?"
Seriously, what about somebody with a little, I don't know, talent? Or at least a bit of an edge to her? I'd much rather see someone like Kirsten Dunst in this role.

Gay & Lesbian Dramas (based off my preferences of gay & lesbian and drama films);
Independent Thrillers (because I like indies and thrillers, yeah);
Dark Movies starring Sean Penn (I don't really particularly care for Sean Penn, but I watched Milk, and 21 Grams is in my queue);
Quirky Mother-Daughter Comedies (How is this even a category? This is of course, given that I liked Penelope and I have Happiness in my queue); and
Visually-striking Mind-bending Fantasy. Fuck yeah!

We're all out of airheadedness, but douchebaggery is still available.

Every time I hear someone say that I don't deserve the same rights as they do it's a punch to the gut. And don't think it's a once in a while sort of thing. It's every day and it's everywhere. Daily, I see bumper stickers that look like this on the backs of people's cars, and I want to vomit.

Even though it was four months ago that Prop 8 in California was passed, it doesn't mean it's over for the millions of people in this country that got royally screwed by not just strangers, but people we thought we trusted--friends, family, neighbors.

So everywhere we as the LGBTQ community turn we now have mistrust and disappointment toward people we meet and people we know. Every time I see someone with a bumper sticker or hear someone say something negative about the people in our community, I want to ask, "Why? Why do you hate us so much that you'd condemn us to second-class citizenship?"

A lot of people try to defend their actions, usually by either using the Bible as an excuse, or by saying, "Well, I have gay friends." Bullshit. Just because you know gay people does not mean you are friends with them. Let me define friendship for you.
The state of being friends; friendly relation, or attachment, to a person, or between persons; affection arising from mutual esteem and good will; friendliness; amity; good will.

So, I list 'the duck-billed platypus' for any profile that asks me about my interests. MySpace happens to gear its ads toward what you list under their profile categories. Here's the latest ad directed toward my interests:

That's what's up! [Sunday Edition Special]

In keeping with the name of the blog, I figured I should do something special on Sunday editions, since I post whenever I feel like it anyway. So I'll leave it up to the readers (all three of you) to decide what I should do for my Sunday posts. Make it fun and interesting, and I'll decide out of the submissions which I like best.

Also, you might find some changes to the blog-- I recently remembered I had a twitter account, so you'll find updates from that near the top of the page on the right. You can find the blogs I'm following toward the bottom of the page (also at right).

In other news, the missus and I have been doing some serious movie-watching as of late (we joined Netflix). We're almost done with our (read: my) Christina Ricci binge, and Laura couldn't be happier. We're planning on going shopping when she gets paid, because we both need new clothes. I want pinstriped pants for work and I'm in serious need of jeans.

I'm also going to look on eBay for an old Playstation (the first one) and games. I want to play Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. :)

I am so sad.

The California Supreme Court will most likely uphold Proposition 8, a ballot initiative which ended same-sex marriage in that state a few months after it was finally declared legal. This is just plain wrong. Proponents of Prop 8 claim it is the will of the people, majority rule, etc.

Historically, the majority of people have very seldom protected the rights of minorities. This is why we had slavery for 400 years.

The only upside is that the 18,000 some same-sex marriages performed during the period it was legal will likely remain valid, which is the least the Supreme Court could do.

My car is a hot mess.

I own a 1994 Buick Regal Custom. Jealous? Don't hide your enthusiasm.

Her name is Millie, and she's a piece of shit. My taillights turn on (and stay on) whenever they feel like it, including when the car is off, which runs down my battery--which means I have to jump start it 1/4 of the time. The emergency brake comes on when it rains or snows. The driver's side door doesn't open from the outside. And there's a huge dent in the rear quarter panel from when some asshole in a teal car slammed into me (so of course the panel is now blue).

I'm looking for a new car. I would love a Jeep Wrangler (with automatic transmission, preferably, since I can't drive stick) (save your jokes). But at this point anything that runs would be preferable. I hate to put money into fixing the car, since there are a million and a half things wrong with it. But the car wouldn't start this morning, for no particular reason other than that it didn't feel like it, so I'm getting fed up with it.

I should clean out my car.
